Your X9 or X7 processors and XR8 / XR6 / XR4 receivers are Roon Ready network players that have Roon’s high-resolution streaming technology built in. Roon will discover compatible network players on your home network and deliver the highest quality audio content available from your music library (see more information at the end of this article).
Roon requires the use of a Roon Core device (that runs the Roon OS) and the Roon desktop or mobile apps for streaming and control of your music library. The Roon Core can be your computer or a dedicated device such as Roon’s Nucleus+. Check out this link for more information on how Roon works and what you need to get set up to enjoy high-resolution audio playback from your AudioControl processor or receiver. How Roon Works.
Please refer to this Setup Menu article on how to access and navigate the setup menu options of your AudioControl processor or receiver using the front panel buttons and display or via the web browser interface.
Once you have your Roon Core setup then make sure your AudioControl processor or receiver, Roon Core device, and mobile devices are all connected to your home network (same SSID). For your AudioControl device, connect an Ethernet cable to the rear panel Ethernet port and then plug the cable into your home network router or network switch. We also recommend a wired connection for the Roon Core device. Your mobile devices will need to be connected to your home WiFi.
To ensure that your AudioControl device is connected to your network you can use the front panel buttons and display to confirm that your unit has acquired an IP address from your network router. Select Menu > select Network > make note of the IP Address and MAC Address of your device. Read more about network connections at the end of this article.
Once you have your Roon Core set up and all of your associated devices are connected to your home network please follow these steps to start streaming audio to your AudioControl processor or receiver.
Open the Roon desktop or mobile app, select the three bar menu icon in the upper left corner of the app > select Settings > select Audio > you should now see a Roon Ready section where you will see a list of available Roon Ready network players along with the network players IP address > select Enable for your AudioControl processor or receiver. Don’t worry if you see the “Uncertified” indication in the Device Info window, you can still connect. Roon Partner certification for AudioControl is coming soon!
Once you have enabled your AudioControl device you will now see a double gear settings icon to the right in the Device Info window. Click on the gears icon and follow the instructions below to set your volume control preference.
Volume Control: You can choose how you would like to control volume when streaming audio to your AudioControl network player. Select the gear icon > select Device Setup > select the Volume drop down > then select either Fixed Volume or Device Volume. Fixed Volume locks the Roon apps volume control, volume is adjusted only from your AudioControl device using the front panel volume knob, remote control, or HT Remote mobile app. The Device Volume setting allows the volume control slider in the Roon app to control the volume of your AudioControl processor or receiver, volume status will track in the Roon app and on the front panel.
Once you have selected your volume control preference you can exit out of the Roon Settings menu.
Now you can start streaming audio using the Roon desktop software or Roon mobile app. When you first open the software or mobile app you will most likely be prompted to “Select An Audio Zone“. In the bottom right corner of the software or app window you will see a speaker icon, select that and you will see a window open with a list of available audio zones to choose from (Zones = compatible and enabled Roon network players). Select your AudioControl zone and you’re ready to stream. In the example screen shot below the AudioControl XR-4 zone is already selected.
When you select Switch Zone or Select Zone you will see this list:
To stream audio you can access your music library that is on a NAS drive or you can link music service accounts within the Roon app, such as for Tidal, Qobuz, etc. Please refer to the Roon website or contact Roon technical support for more information about integrating audio sources with Roon.
Network information: To ensure the best possible streaming experience we highly recommend that you connect your AudioControl device to your home network via a wired connection. To do this connect a Category 6 network cable from the rear panel Ethernet port on your AudioControl device to your home network router, or better yet to a network switch. For best network performance, if you are connecting multiple devices to your network with a wired connection then all devices should plug into a Gigabit speed network switch and then plug only the switch into a LAN port on your router. Refer to your network hardware manuals or ask your professional AV/Network Systems Integrator for instructions on how to make these connections.
