FAQs

A Line Output Converter (LOC) is an essential interface tool used to connect an aftermarket car audio amplifier to a factory head unit that lacks dedicated RCA preamp outputs. Its primary function is to take the high-level, high-voltage signal intended for factory speakers and step it down to a low-level, low-voltage signal that an amplifier can safely process via RCA cables. Without this device, attempting to wire an amplifier directly to factory speaker leads would likely result in severe signal clipping or permanent damage to the amplifier's input stage.
-
You need a line output converter (LOC) if you are adding an aftermarket amplifier to a factory head unit that lacks dedicated RCA preamp outputs. Most factory stereos only provide high-level "speaker-wire" signals intended for standard speakers, which carry too much voltage and "noise" to be plugged directly into the low-level RCA inputs of an amplifier. The LOC acts as a vital bridge, stepping down that high-voltage speaker signal to a clean, low-voltage RCA signal that your amplifier can safely process without distortion. While some modern amplifiers feature "high-level inputs" that eliminate the need for a separate converter, using a high-quality active LOC is often still preferred because it can provide a stronger signal-to-noise ratio, trigger a remote turn-on signal for your amp, and even correct the factory "bass roll-off".
-
High-quality line output converters (LOCs) can significantly improve sound quality by correcting factory signal deficiencies. Many modern vehicle head units are programmed with a "bass roll-off" or fixed equalization curves that thin out the sound at higher volumes to protect factory speakers; AudioControl's LC2i & LC7i LOCs feature internal processing, such as AccuBASS, that can correct this "bass roll-off". Additionally, LCi LOCs provide a much higher voltage signal compared to basic models, which lowers the noise floor and reduces the likelihood of hearing "hiss" or engine whine through your subwoofers.
-
The best line output converters (LOCs) are those that offer active signal processing and high voltage handling to ensure a clean, distortion-free transition from factory speaker wires to aftermarket amplifiers. For reliable performance, the AudioControl LC2i PRO is widely considered the industry standard because it features AccuBASS technology, which compensates for the factory bass roll-off common in modern vehicles, and provides a high-voltage output for maximum signal-to-noise ratio.
If you are integrating into a complex factory system with multiple amplified channels, the AudioControl LC7i PRO is an excellent choice, offering AccuBASS, multi-channel summing, load selection switch, multiple trigger modes, and much more for easy integration without a remote turn-on wire.
